Frequently Asked Questions

Is Skyrunner service available in my area?

The only way to know for sure is to call and check.  We are able to reach into many remote areas of Buncombe, Polk, Henderson, Rutherford and other nearby counties, due to the power and range of our radio equipment.  However, if your business or house is "down in a holler" or surrounded by thick tree cover, you may not be able to see one of our access points no matter how centrally you're located.  Call and ask whether Skyrunner can reach you.  It's the only way to know for sure.

What special equipment do I need to connect to Skyrunner?

All that's required is that you have a network card in your Windows, MacIntosh or Linux computer.  We provide all the other equipment you need.  If you want to share your connection among several computers, you'll need a low-cost router or switch.  We can advise you on any additional network equipment you might need, and can often provide the hardware at very low prices.

What kind of radios do you use?  Are they secure?

Skyrunner is a national leader in radio technology.  We utilize a variety of different radio equipment tailored for particular needs based on speed, distance from our transmitter, and customer requirements.  Our radios are not broadcasting an "open" signal, such as you might find in a wireless hotspot at an airport or cafe.  They are directed to specific points with directional antennas, and are secured against intrusion and monitored constantly.

Albert Einstein, when asked to describe radio, replied:
"You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat."
